NES Wireless Gamepad for PC, MAC, Android and iOS

I’ve had a very nice working relationship with Xgaming for well over a decade.  These guys make high quality arcade controllers and arcade cabinets for arcade emulators like MAME.  They’ve been around a long time and I have praised them over and over through the years on my popular RetroGaming Radio podcast.

Recently they sent me a very retro looking controller with very modern capabilities – the NES Wireless Gamepad.  How could any lover of retro gaming NOT want one of these?  Let’s check it out together. Read more

Tech Armor – Quality and Style in External Batteries

It is 2016 and almost every digital appliance in our arsenal is battery powered.  While great strides are being made every year in battery economy and longevity, most of us are still chained to some form of external battery pack to supplement our power needs – whether it be a cell phone, tablet, Bluetooth speaker, controller, headphones …. well you get the idea.

With all this need – hundreds if not thousands of manufacturers around the world are trying to come up with the perfect external power source; and if they can’t, they are looking to come up with a different gimmick or hook to separate them from the pack.  Sometimes they are just trying to be the cheapest possible.

Then you have Tech Armor. Read more

Review: ANNT Smart Touch LED Desk Lamp

I’ve reviewed a couple of these now and the real benefit to these sorts of lamps is the ability to be adjustable – both in brightness and in position. They run very cool, use very little power and usually have extra features.  The manufacturer read some of my Amazon reviews and thought I might like to see theirs.

This lamp goes all the way.

Show Us The Light

Let’s start with the light itself. The large LED panel is very different from many lamps. It really casts more illumination, more evenly. It is almost like a mini-light box in itself. Light features two types of light; bright white (for reading) and a bright natural light mode. Using two buttons you adjust the light between the two modes. Read more

Brainwavz S5 In Ear Headphones

Image1

Music is an important part of my life and at 45 years old I’ve been around the block with just about every genre of music.  While I’m not a huge fan of certain genres I am still eclectic; I can find a song in just about every one of them that I like.

Let me start this review with the fact that I am NOT a high end audiophile. I don’t own an oscilloscope. I’ve never paid more than $30 for a pair of headphones. Most of my music is encoded in 192kbps MP3. This puts me on the playing field with probably 90%+ of my audience. If it is “FLAC or nothing” for you or you would be insulted by paying less than $100 for headphones – this might not be your review.

I’m a regular guy that happens to love all sorts of music – but it isn’t my religion. This is the most expensive pair of headphones I’ve ever used (I was provided a sample by the company). Read more

RAVPower RP-PB19 Deluxe 15000mAh Portable Charger

Every year, our power needs grow. Tablets get bigger, phones get more needy. Portable power is pretty much a must for anyone travelling or for someone that works away from a power source all day.

The good news is – there are hundreds (if not THOUSANDS) of choices for portable external battery chargers. The bad news is – they are not created equally and may not reasonably meet the needs you bought them for.

When buying an external battery like the RAVPower 15000mAh PB-19(from now on, just PB-19; about $40 from Amazon), you need to consider four major things; how long it will last, how powerful is the output, what sort of quality of battery are you getting inside – and finally, how long will it take to recharge?

TaoTronics Elune TT-DL01 Dimmable LED Desk Lamp

The Elune LED Lamp

The Elune LED Lamp

Typically, I wouldn’t review a lamp.  Once again, my wife was the guilty party – wanting something to craft with next to her chair.

Whenever my wife goes all Zen over something, I start learning things.  Like artificial light is bad for cross stitching.

I will spare you the lecture on how similar colors are hard to discern in artificial light.  Instead, let’s take a look at the TaoTronics Elune TT-DL01 LED Lamp. Read more

Ten Reasons To Own The NVidia Shield

My recent acquisition of the NVidia Shield has really got me charged up. I wrote a four part review discussing it in great detail, but I know not everyone wants to consume that much literature on the topic, so here is the quick guide version of why you should own an NVidia Shield. Read more

RAVPower BOLT 30W/6A 4-Port USB Charging Station

There are some days when my insatiable need for USB charging outlets surprises even me.  It seems every couple of weeks I have ANOTHER device I need to plug in to charge frequently; and the devices I do not need to charge frequently ALWAYS need to be charging when one of my critical devices is dead or dying for more power.

I installed a 6 port USB hub under the lip of my desk; hoping to cure my need for USB ports/plugs but I learned quickly that USB hubs just don’t deliver the juice fast enough to revitalize my high drain electronics.

A few months ago, I contacted RAVPower, the folks that provide us with a lot of hardware to review here about essentially a “power extension cord” for USB power.  Something with a lot of plugs with plenty of juice to push power to my greedy devices.  The apologetically said that they didn’t have anything like that yet, but they would let me know if they did in the future.

The future is now and they were happy to send me one for review. Read more

Girl Power: RAVPower Luster Series RP-08 Power Bank

In an attempt to bring more of the fairer sex to Review Lagoon, I’m trying to cover more female-gender-friendly products here on the site.  I got the idea from a co-worker who borrowed my monster RavPower PB-13 power bank (read my review) in an emergency to charge her phone.  She said she would love something like this, but the PB-13 was just too big and heavy for her to carry around.  I did some research and found the “lipstick” style Luster Series RP-08.  It even came in a color that my co-worker liked.

While it is easy to discuss this as a “girl power” product, it could just as easily supplement the male market’s power needs on the go.  If numbers aren’t your thing, skip down to Girl Power? below. Read more

How Nintendo Made Me A Jaded Gamer (and it’s not how you think)

Credit: themodernmage.com

Credit: themodernmage.com

When you think of the term “die hard gamer” or “hard core gamer” (or any number of these labels that are thrust upon the gaming consumer that relate to people who really love video gaming) you typically have a mental picture painted.  Some 18-29 year old, living in their parent’s basement – wired up to a cerebral brain implanted headset trash talking to “friends” they’ve never met.  They are probably still in their underwear; chewing on a piece of day-old pizza – playing the latest rendition of the endlessly spawned first person shooter.  No sunlight is allowed in the room – the windows implicitly covered.  If they have a car, their gaming rig probably costed more than it did – a big screen, low-latency flatscreen and some receiver special ordered because it has 4 HDMI inputs instead of 2.  Every current and last gen console (except those made by Nintendo because, like – those are kiddie systems, dudebro) is rigged up and there are discarded Live, PSN+ and various redemption cards scattered on the floor.

How am I doing so far?  Fairly representative? Read more
